Damp or Dust

Common situation

Sneezing and dust at home: what to try before an air purifier

Dust on every surface, sneezing and itchy eyes point to particles in the air rather than damp. A few free changes come first; a purifier may help after that.

What it usually points to

Dust and sneezing point to things in the air: dust, pollen or pet dander.

What to check and try first

  1. Dust with a damp cloth, vacuum weekly (a HEPA vacuum if you have one), and wash sheets and pillowcases weekly in water hotter than 60°C.
  2. For a week, note when it's worst: the time of day, which room, the weather, and what was going on (showers, cooking, heating, cleaning). The pattern often points to the cause.

These steps assume only: dust on surfaces, sneezing, itchy eyes. Your home may be different. Add what else is going on and you'll get steps for your situation.

What would change this

If symptoms carry on after two weeks of this, or are worse at home and better away, talk to a GP. If damp signs turn up, run this again.

DampOrDust is a general educational decision aid. It is not a home inspection, a safety assessment, a medical diagnosis or building advice. Suggestions are based only on the answers you pick and can't detect hidden water damage, hazards or every possible cause. Don't rely on it to decide whether a home is safe: get qualified help for persistent damp, recurring mould, suspected gas or combustion problems, or health symptoms.
